CINEBLEND DOCS

The Roots documentary program is organised by Cineblend, the new name of Beeld voor Beeld festival. It is a meeting place for filmmakers and audiences of diverse cultural backgrounds. During Amsterdam Roots Festival, Cineblend will showcase the latest documentaries on music and circus, including a number of Dutch premieres. The screenings are followed by discussions with filmmakers and other people involved with the films, and live performances.

WEDNESDAY 21 JUNE –  20:00

FILM: ON THE BANKS OF THE TIGRIS –  THE HIDDEN STORY OF IRAQI MUSIC
Dutch premiere
This musical odyssey tells the unknown and nearly forgotten story of the Iraqi Maqam music. After escaping Saddam Hussein’s regime, Majid Shokor went on a search for the roots of the music he had enjoyed in the lively streets and coffee parlours of Bagdad. With music by, among others, Ahmed Mukhtar, Yair Dalal, Farida and the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble.
With live music by Monir Goran, guitar and ud player from Irak.

FILM: MUZIEK OP DE VLUCHT (MUSIC ON THE RUN)
A melancholic voice sounds from within the refugee camp in Calais. ‘I am here, but my soul is on the other side of the ocean’. The song is a poignant display of the mood of the thousands of refugees staying at the camp. The hope for a better future has given way to fear, apathy and sadness. What remains is music.
After Talk with Frans, Sylvia and Ruben Bromet en live music by Nawras Altaky, singer and ud player from Syria.

FILM: CIRCUS WITHOUT BORDERS – THE STORY OF ARTCIRQ AND KALABANTE
Dutch premiere
Guillaume Saladin and Yamoussa Bangoura are the leading characters in this documentary. They are professional acrobats from different parts of the world, sharing a similar dream of bringing hope and change into their struggling communities, utilizing circus. They battle against poverty, despair and suicide in their regions, the Canadian arctic region and Guinee (West Africa). Two cultures, one circus.
