KEL ASSOUF

HARD-HITTING DESERT ROCK FROM THE SAHARA

Brussels based band Kel Assouf has had a strong impact on the Tuareg scene. Their heavy rock sound and African trance rhythms transport the listener to a dance floor somewhere in between London and Niamey. Kel Assouf built their identity around the two central ideas of promoting Tuareg culture and battling against discrimination.

Their latest album ‘Tikounen’ (surprise) expresses feelings of surprise and anger towards a world in which war, injustice and pollution are everywhere. In sentences comparable to Japanese Haiku poems band leader Anana Harouna sings about the Sahara, Niger and Brussels, sending out a message of peace and respect to the world. Accompanied by singer Toulou Kiki, known from the film Timbuktu by Abderrahmane Sissako, the band shows the important position women have in Tuareg society.

Before and after the concert, Afrobot will play his favorite records.

The Rest is Noise is the Muziekgebouw concert series focusing on artists whose music defies categorization.
