BATTLE OF SANTIAGO

RADIOHEAD MEETS IRAKERE & FELA KUTI

It might be unexpected but in the City of Toronto, Canada resides one of the biggest Cuban communities in North America. Something that you can clearly hear in Battle of Santiago’s sound. What began as an experimental rock band with Latin percussion the band now combines Afro Cuban rhythms and vocals with (post-)rock and Afrobeat. Creating a sound that reminds us of Radiohead meets Irakere and Fela Kuti. There are several Battles of Santiago after which the group can be named,  like one in Cuba during the Spanish-American war but even also a World Cup match in Chile. This ambiguity reflects the band’s music: a sound clash that is subject to change. On their latest record “La Migra” the Group sounds more diverse, with influences from cumbia, dub and funk.
