PIONEERS OF THE KLEZMER REVIVAL
With more than 30 years and 11 albums under their belt, The Klezmatics still apply the absolute standard in the klezmer-music, Yiddish dance music in which laughter and tears are one line. This iconic New York Group, strongly connected with the then underground scene around the Knitting Factory (back in the day), never kept to the pure klezmer-conventions. With Klezmer as starting point, you will hear influences from Arab, Balkan, Celtic, Latin, and African music as jazz and punk. In addition, the focus on contemporary themes such as human rights, social justice, and anti-fundamentalism, it becomes clear the music of the group is not just wild and provocative, but also why the group caused a Klezmer revival in the late 80’s/early 90s that still continues.
