Sharp-tongued female rap from Bamako

"I am a Denfari," Ami Yerewolo says of herself, which in Bambara means, "I am a child who is not afraid of change." One of the few female rappers in her native Mali, Yerewolo defies conventions and prejudice.

Yerewolo raps about issues that concern her contemporaries in Mali: family, self-development, nationalism and women's rights. Moreover, she is not afraid to rap about sexism and other forms of injustice. She creates beats with witty, clever and sometimes biting lyrics in a mix of French and Bambara.
