Talks & performances

This program is in English

What roles can history and the arts play to move us from historical distancing to social solidarity?

As part of the series Amsterdam Vertelt Amsterdam Roots Festival presents at Pakhuis de Zwijger a prelude to the new performance of Sites of Memory called Future for the Past. This theater performance would be shown during Amsterdam Roots Festival, but has been moved to autumn due to Covid-19. In Pakhuis de Zwijger we already give a glimpse of the veil and we take you into the world of the makers of Future for the Past.

Future for the Past is an international exchange between artists from South Africa and The Netherlands about the connected colonial heritage. Artists and historians from both countries will discuss the roles that history and the arts can play in reimagining the future. How can performance-based initiatives transform historical distancing to social solidarity? Join us in shifting perspectives and learning from the past. The programme will include a panel discussion, spoken word and dance performances.

Hosted by cultural historian Jennifer Tosch and theatre maker Katy Streek, founders of stichting Sites of Memory.

With Jennifer Tosch, Katy Streek, Mirte Hartland, Jörgen Gario, Jomecia Oosterwolde, Jay Pather, Nancy Jouwe, Toni Stuart en Raul Balai.

Presented in partnership with Pakhuis de Zwijger.
