Ustad Noor Bakhsh

Ustad Noor Bakhsh, from Balochistan, is a master of the Balochi Benju. This stringed instrument, inspired by a Japanese instrument developed as far back as a century ago in Japan, has found its way to South Asia. Noor Bakhsh uses an electric Benju, amplified by an old Philips amplifier. His unparalleled skill is rooted in the rich Balochi musical tradition and enriched by his knowledge of Persian and Kurdish music, which he interprets in his own unique way. For listeners unfamiliar with Balochi music, the electric sounds of Noor Bakhsh's Benju and its melodic embellishments will be reminiscent of the mesmerising Sahara blues of North and West Africa.
