The band Malphino from London takes you to the imaginary, tropical island “Republica Federal de Malphino”. There is a volcano in the middle of the island and it is cumbia cumbia cumbia that strikes the clock. These stimulating Latin dance rhythms are for everyone, for all genders, for all ages and all nationalities. The Malphino collective is a colorful company. Musicians from Japan, Philippines, England, Malaysia, Colombia and France. With so many different backgrounds and tastes, Malphino’s cumbia is as eclectic as it is transcendental.
It all started in 2010 with a DJ set by the Japanese Yu Sato who played obscure records from Latin America. Around the set Alex Maglalang played on his accordion and David Aird on the tuba. More people joined the trio which then grew into a collective of musicians, artists and designers. After two EPs from 2012 and 2015, the debut album Visit Malphino (Lex Records) followed in 2018 with tracks that evoke memories of the paradise-like fantasy island.
